The Disease Dental Caries

diseasedentalThe disease dental caries begins when decay-causing germs settle on the surface of a tooth. Once on the surface, the germs create a film in which they live. The film is called biofilm.

Then, each time a sugar is eaten or drunk, the germs convert that sugar into acid. The acid draws the minerals out of the tooth’s surface for about a half hour.

However, after the half hour,  the minerals go back into the surface and the tooth heals from the acid attack......and it’s fluoride that drives stronger minerals back into the tooth.

A cavity occurs when the tooth is in acid-attack all day long. The weak enamel breaks down and the germs attack the second layer of the tooth called dentin. Once the process hits the nerve, the tooth becomes infected or abscessed.
